The McIntosh MC240 is the amplifier equivalent of a classic muscle car: big, bold, unapologetically old-school, and guaranteed to make modern gear look like disposable tech toys. Released in the early 1960s, this 40-watt-per-channel tube beast is still flexing in systems across the globe, long after most of its contemporaries have bitten the dust. Why? Because McIntosh built it like a tank—and because audiophiles can’t resist those glowing tubes and that unmistakable McIntosh chrome chassis.

Let’s get one thing straight: the MC240 doesn’t care about your minimalist, all-digital audio setup. It’s here to remind you what real hi-fi sounds like, with a side of “they don’t make ’em like they used to” thrown in for good measure.

This is a beautiful example. There is a bit of surface scratching on the chrome and transformers (as to be expected) but there is no rust and the lettering is perfect.

• Recapped power supply with Nichicon and F&T multi-section capacitors
